Songs of a Zealot Album Review by Enter the Zone host and Hip-Hop specialist David Indikator Fuller
NYOKA NY-D Songs Of A Zealot
Nyoka Ny-D has everything you could ever want in an emcee. She has originality, style, flavor, intelligence, spirituality and most of all, she has her own distinct voice and is a great person to be around.
Her debut album Songs Of A Zealot, reminds me of a time in Hip Hop where diversity still meant something. She lyrically handles every song on the album with great skill. By that I mean, lyrical skill and having the skill to think outside the box and remain there. Nyoka Ny-D pulls you into every song with her delivery and flow. The intro track Pride grabs hold of you and does not let go and that remains throughout the entire album. I enjoyed the entire album. The first time I listened I had to stop the CD, only because I had to readjust where I was to get the full flavor this album truly has.
Ny-D, as she is so affectionately called, has intellegent lyrics and delivers them in a way real Hip Hop heads will truly enjoy. At the ripe old age of twenty, she is light years ahead of the rest of her competition. It is my belief that she wants you to feel her music as if you were in the studio when she laid each track and what it meant when the deed was done.
As I stated, the entire album is well produced and well written. My personal favorites are Pride, Stay True, Poetically Speaking, the title track Songs of s Zealot, Journey Through This Life and Travel.
Ny-D attacks Poetically Speaking with the fire of an veteran emcee with a youthful, venomous flow. The song Travel makes you want to do just that. I am very impressed by this young woman and her artistic ability. She will be around for a very long time.
You can check her out at various venues around the Philadelphia and New York area with her band, Zealotry. Songs of a Zealot is also available at her website nyokanyd.com, iTunes, Amazon.com and other fine online retailers.
